Carol’s Column

Carol Lazar · Johannesburg · 1979–2001

Editorial notes

This site has 531 columns, an estimated 80% of all those Carol wrote.

The columns are transcribed from photographs of clippings and typed pages. Source photographs are retained for checking the text.

How the text is treated

Columns are transcribed from the page, and then plain slips are corrected: typing and typesetting errors that carry no meaning. What is never corrected is her voice. Heppy Klissimus and Medem at the door, Nisson Mandra, Die Bleddy Boom, geese geesed: these are the writing, not mistakes, and where a reader might take one for an error the column says so beneath it.

Where a word is faint, smudged or cut away on the photocopy, an editorial note records the doubt rather than hiding it, and text genuinely lost is marked in place instead of being smoothed over.

How a column is dated

Dates come from the printed masthead, handwritten annotations or the source catalogue. Where these disagree, the printed clipping takes precedence. Uncertain dates are marked on the column.

A column can survive twice

A few exist both as the clipping the paper printed and as a page Carol typed out again later, in her own different words: ou for gentleman, a tout at the gate where the paper had a young man. The typescript belongs to its column rather than beside it, so it is shown on that column's page, under a heading of its own, and the column is counted once.
